Validating memory device actions using reference values

This document describes a technique for comparing and validating an action (eg, reading or writing by a host device) associated with a memory device element that stores a value against a reference value. The reference value is associated with the actual characteristics of the memory. The element storing the value may be stored in a memory area configured for metadata storage. Because the element is reprogrammable after the memory device has been manufactured, the value stored in this element can be changed by the host device, thereby erroneously or incorrectly reflecting the characteristics of the memory. Conversely, the reference value is stored in a separate memory area, and the reference value is a true value.
