FIELD: chemistry.;SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for reducing the rate of surface current degradation of components inf a hydraulic system exposed to phosphate-ester-based hydraulic fluid. Method comprises adding a redox couple to the hydraulic fluid, wherein the redox couple comprises a sandwich compound of the formula: M(Ar)2+/0, wherein M is a transition metal and Ar is an aryl compound.
