A homogeneous compression ignition (HCCI) engine control system (102), comprising: a fuel demand estimation module (246) that determines a fuel demand of the HCCI engine (102) based on a mean effective target pressure (target IMEP) of cylinders (118) in the HCCI engine (102); a torque estimation module (244) estimating a torque output of the HCCI engine (102) based on the estimated fuel demand; and a torque control module (224) that adjusts the torque output of the HCCI engine (102) based on the estimated torque output and a torque request, wherein the torque control module (224) estimates the torque output of the HCCI engine (102) based on an average value or a weighted average of three estimated torque outputs respectively corresponding to SI combustion, mixed mode combustion, and HCCI combustion.
