A system and method for controlling crankshaft torque during a transmission shift with a torque reduction range selection based on a torque capacity
A control system for use with an engine and a transmission in a vehicle, comprising: at least one controller having a processor with at least one stored algorithm that: determines various crankshaft torque capacities associated with different torque actuators of the respective engine, which is a relatively slow torque actuator and at least one relatively fast torque actuator; a torque actuation range over which a crankshaft torque is to be modified during an on-going shift of the transmission; and requesting crankshaft torque modification by use of the relatively slow torque actuator and / or the relatively fast torque actuator based at least in part on the torque actuation range and crankshaft torque capacities; wherein the different crankshaft torque capacities are crankshaft torque at a current engine airflow having a maximum amount of spark retard, crankshaft torque at minimum engine airflow and the maximum amount of spark retard adjustment; and include a crankshaft torque at the minimum engine airflow in the engine and shut off fuel in the engine.
