A coordinate measuring machine that transmits a first light beam to a remote target, wherein the remote target returns a portion of the first light beam as a second light beam, the coordinate measuring machine comprises a device reference system, and comprising: a first motor and a second motor cooperating to form the first light beam to guide in a first direction, wherein the first direction is determined by a first rotation angle about a first axis and a second rotation angle about a second axis and the first rotation angle is generated by the first motor and the second rotation angle is generated by the second motor; a first angle measuring device measuring the first rotation angle and a second angle measuring device measuring the second rotation angle; a distance meter that measures a first distance from the coordinate measuring machine to the remote target based at least in part on the second light beam received from an optical detector; a first part of the coordinate measuring machine which rotates about the first axis; a second part of the coordinate measuring machine which rotates about the second axis; a third part of the coordinate measuring machine fixed relative to the movements about the first axis and the second axis; a 3D transit time (TOF) camera positioned at a periphery of a part of the coordinate measuring machine, the part being selected from the group consisting of the first part, the second part and the third part, and the camera is configured to capture a three-dimensional camera image of an object in an environment around the coordinate measuring machine; and a processor configured to determine at least a first three-dimensional (3-D) coordinate in the device reference system of the remote destination, wherein the at least one of the three-dimensional (3-D) coordinates.
