The present application highlights particulate materials derived from carbonaceous materials, such as carbon foam, as a platform technology for various medical procedures performed to address various tissue defects and / or pathologies. The particles are biocompatible, allow the attachment and differentiation of cells, and provide a three-dimensional substrate that allows neovascularization. Methods are disclosed herein wherein the use and subsequent physical interactions with the particulate materials, with or without composite materials, are optimized to provide a technological platform useful for a variety of regenerative processes.
