Method and device for the controlled control of the machining process of equipment, which processes the surface of a workpiece, in particular wide-belt sanding machines, taking into account safety-relevant long-term aspects with the following features: a) the required for the respective processing process plant is supplemented by two, transverse to the direction of the machining process transverse rails (25) as a support of a lighting device and a further transversal rail (22) as a support means for image capture by means of cameras, wherein the adjustment of the lighting adapted to the altitude of the surface to be worked, b) the processing process is started using the detection of the respective surface and the utilization of the data thus determined to control the processing process, c) after the completion of the machining process, appropriate operating data are used to fundamentally improve the machining process and the machining facility.
