The invention relates to a method and to a device for the monitored control of the machining process of systems machining the surface of a workpiece, in particular wide-band grinding machines, whilst taking safety-relevant long-term effects into account, having the following features: a) the system needed for the respective machining process is supplemented by two transverse rails (25) extending transversely to the running direction of the machining process as carriers of an illuminating device, and a further transverse rail (22) as a carrier of an apparatus for image capture by means of cameras, wherein the setting of the illumination is matched to the vertical position of the surface to be machined, b) the machining process is started, wherein the capture of the respective surface and the assessment of the data determined thereby is used to control the machining process, c) following the completion of the machining process, corresponding operating data are used for the fundamental improvement of the machining process and the machining system.
