The sensor control unit (10) for a sensor module (100) comprises at least one interface (12) to receive sensor information from the sensor module (100) and to communicate with a sensor signal receiver (200). The sensor control unit (10) further comprises a control module (14) for controlling the at least one interface (12). The control module (14) is configured to obtain the sensor information from the sensor module (100). The control module (14) is designed to generate a sensor signal based on the sensor information. The control module (14) is designed to transmit the sensor signal. The control module (14) is designed to detect a fault condition of the sensor module (100). The control module (14) is configured to transmit an error indicator when the fault condition indicates a failure of at least a portion of the sensor module (100). The control module (14) is configured to receive a control signal from the sensor signal receiver (200) in response to the error indicator. The control signal comprises at least one error handling instruction. The control module (14) is configured to execute the at least one error handling instruction.
