The invention relates to a method for detecting an object (4) in a surrounding region (5) of a motor vehicle (1), with which, by means of a radar sensor (3) radar signals are emitted and the of the object (4) reflected radar signals are received, on the basis of the radar signals, a received signal is determined from the received signal, a power spectrum (7) is determined, and which an intensity (i) of the received signal in a function of a distance (r) to the object (4) and a radial velocity (vR) of the object (4) describes and, on the basis of the power spectrum (7) the object (4) is detected, whereby from the power spectrum (7) a profile (9) of the intensity (i) as a function of the distance (r) is determined, with the aid of the profile (9) a minimal distance value (rmin.) and a maximum distance value (ra maximum) be determined and, on the basis of the minimum distance value (rmin.) and of the maximum distance value (ra maximum) Dimensions of the object (4) are determined.n="22"
