A system includes a processor. The processor estimates a flow pattern of a mixture of drilling fluid and cuttings in a ring of a wellbore. The flux is estimated to be a stationary bed flux, a dispersed flux, or a transitional flux relative to stationary bed flux and dispersed flux. The processor estimates parameters based on the estimated flow pattern, and determines a plurality of dimensionless parameters including a first dimensionless parameter corresponding to an effect of the turbulence on the flow and a second dimensionless parameter corresponding to an effect of gravity on the stream, based on the plurality of estimated parameters. The processor characterizes the flow pattern as the stationary bed stream, the dispersed stream, or the transitional stream, based on the determined dimensionless parameters, and models the stream based on the estimated scheme if it is determined that the characterized pattern matches to the estimated scheme.
