The present invention relates to a capstan (10) comprising a frame (13), a headstock (14) and a crank recess (16) for rotating the headstock (14) relation to the frame (13). According to the invention, the capstan (10) comprises means for assisting the rotation of the headstock (14), the assistance means comprising a motor (120) capable of supplying some of the effort required for rotating the headstock (14), and means for controlling the motor (120) which take into account, on the one hand, at least one information item which represents the angular position of the crank recess (16) and, on the other hand, at least one information item which represents the angular position of the rotor (1200) of said motor (120).
