A polymer-based electrode 1,3 comprising at least one layer containing: a continuous, solid and porous electroactive polymer material 1b,3b; and liquid electrolyte present in the pores of the electroactive polymer material 1b,3b. Also disclosed is a method of making the above electrode 1,3 comprising: a step of processing a pre-formed electro-active polymer so as provide the continuous, solid and porous electro-active polymer layer 1b,3b. The electro-active polymer layer 1b,3b may be in the form of an open-cell foam and may be formed of a conjugated organic polymer.As a result of the modified morphology of the polymer layer thin-film charge-storage devices using these polymer-based electrodes exhibit improved charge-storage and current output and enable manufacturing of a gradual continuum between batteries and supercapacitors.
