A robotic surgical system (10) comprises a manipulator (12) for moving and / or operating a surgical instrument (500) intended for use in a single operation, a control unit (36) for controlling the manipulator (12), a reading and writing device (160) for reading and storing data from a data memory (494) of the surgical instrument (500). In this case, the reading and writing device (160) is designed to read first data with first information about the surgical instrument (500) in connection with a coupling of the surgical instrument (500) to the robot system (10) from the data memory (494) and to the control unit (36). Based on the second information contained in the second data, the control unit (36) checks whether at least one compatibility criterion fulfills at least one compatibility condition preset in the control unit (36). The control unit (36) admits the surgical instrument (500) for use by the robotic surgical system (10) only if the compatibility criterion satisfies the at least one preset stored compatibility condition. A corresponding approval control procedure ensures use of a surgical instrument (500) in a single operation.
