Blocked PEEK copolymers and corresponding synthetic methods are described herein. Surprisingly, it has been found that the synthesis of block PEEK copolymers in a non-solvent environment with respect to PEEK produces block PEEK copolymers with a high degree of functionalization and crystallinity. This blocky PEEK copolymer had an increased blocky structure compared to the corresponding PEEK copolymer synthesized by other known methods. Furthermore, membranes formed from block PEEK polymers are particularly desirable in fuel cell applications. For example, films formed from block PEEK polymers, at least in part, have surprisingly high ionic conductivity and significantly improved chemical and heat resistance due to improved functionalization and crystallinity.
