The diagnosis of male infertility is mainly based on the results of standard semen analysis on concentration, overall motility, forward motility, volume, pH, viscosity and / or morphology. When a sperm enters the female reproductive tract, it must undergo a series of physiological changes known as fertility acquisition in order to fertilize the egg. This process involves changes in the plasma membrane that occur in response to stimulation in the female duct. These changes include removal of sterols and redistribution of ganglioside GMI. Semen analysis identifies only half of cases of male infertility due to standard semen analysis that provides little information about the functional capabilities of sperm. Previous data demonstrated that the localization of ganglioside GMI identified a subpopulation of sperm that could undergo a functional maturation process known as fertility acquisition and was in strong agreement with fertility.
