System and method for using aligned fluoroscopic images in image guided surgery

The method performed by the computer system includes the step of receiving a fluoroscopic image of the patient's anatomy while a portion of the medical device is disposed within the patient's anatomy. The fluoroscopic image has a fluoroscopic reference frame. This part has a detection position in the anatomical structure model reference frame. The method further includes the steps of identifying the portion in the fluoroscopic image, and identifying the extraction position of the portion in the fluoroscopic reference frame using the identified portion in the fluoroscopic image. The method further includes the step of aligning the fluoroscopic reference frame to the anatomical structure model reference frame based on the detected position of the portion and the extracted position of the portion.
