The added alkali metal hydroxide is used alone or (a) calcium hydroxyapatite and / or added calcium carbonate used as a calcium-containing base that reacts with a complexing acid and / or (b) conversion. An overbased calcium sulfonate grease composition and method of manufacture comprising in combination with at least one delay period between the addition of water as an agent and a portion of the non-aqueous conversion agent. The delay period may include the period required to adjust the temperature of the mixture, the period during which the mixture is held at a temperature or range of temperatures, and any combination thereof. These calcium sulfonate greases have no delay between the addition of water and the addition of a non-aqueous conversion agent without the addition of alkali metal hydroxides, especially when low quality overbased calcium sulfonates are used. Compared to the prepared grease, the thickener yield is improved and the dropping point is high.
