A microfluidic device (11) for separation and analysis of microfluidic samples is provided. The device includes: a separation channel (10); a first electrolyte channel designed to provide a flow of high conductivity electrolyte solution in use, with a positive electrode (13 at the downstream outlet of the channel). A first electrolyte channel (12) comprising: a second electrolyte channel designed to provide a flow of high conductivity electrolyte solution in use, wherein a negative electrode (15) is provided at a downstream outlet of the channel. Said second electrolyte channel (14) comprising; and wherein the electrolyte flow through said first and second electrolyte channels removes electrophoretic products and bubbles from said device; and wherein said electrolyte The presence of provides a substantially uniform electric field in the separation channel.
