A method is disclosed of welding first and second metallic workpieces (1, 3) together. A layer of weld modifying material (4) is applied to a surface of one or each of the first and second metallic workpieces (1, 3) using a cold spraying or thermal spraying process (4). The first and second metallic workpieces (1, 3) are then welded together such that the weld modifying material (4) is incorporated into the weld (6).
