A method for recovering sulfur from a sulfur waste, the method comprising the steps of: providing a first sulfur waste stream and a second sulfur waste stream, each stream comprising sulfur-bound compositions; supplying the first sulfur waste stream to a burner zone; oxidizing the first sulfur waste stream and a nitrogen source comprising nitrogen-bound compositions in the burner zone at a first temperature range and a stoichiometric ratio R to oxygen in a range between 0.90 and 1.20 such that a product gas P comprising SO2 and NOx is formed; forwarding a product stream of the product gas P to a combustion zone and supplying the second sulfur waste stream to the combustion zone; and mixing the product gas P and the second sulfur waste stream in the combustion zone at a second temperature range to reduce SO 2 according to a Claus reaction such that sulfur S is obtained.
