An apparatus for monitoring a brush (2) of an electric machine, comprising; - at least one electronic position sensor (3) configured to be arranged in a brush holder assembly of an electric machine, wherein said electronic sensor measures the position of the brush at high speed and high resolution, and continuously receives a position signal from the brush from the brushes (2) without contact by means of a part that interacts with the position sensor (4); - means (5) for transmitting the position signal to a processing unit; and wherein said apparatus for controlling a brush (2) of an electric machine is characterized in that it further comprises means for synchronizing the determination of the position signal of the brush with the rotation of the slip ring.
