The invention is, on the one hand, a combined bright-field and phase-contrast microscopy system, comprising a bright-field illumination unit (10), a phase-contrast illumination unit (20), and a control unit (40) adapted for controlling a switching of the bright-field illumination unit (10) and a switching of phase-contrast illumination unit (20). The bright-field illumination unit (10) and the phase-contrast illumination unit (20) have optical axes (11, 21) different from each other, and the microscopy system further comprises - an optical element (30) providing a common optical axis (31) of illumination both for an illumination arriving from the bright-field illumination unit (10) and for an illumination arriving from the phase-contrast illumination unit (20), and, arranged one after the other along the common optical axis (31) of illumination, a - sample holder (33), - a phase-contrast objective (35) and - an image recorder (50) adapted for taking an image before and an image after each respective switchover between the two illumination types. On the other hand, the invention is an image processing apparatus applying the above microscopy system.
