The invention relates to a method for protecting a belt of an alternator associated with an engine against early wear or breakage of the belt, in which a torque collected by the alternator on the engine is controlled by a voltage setpoint (Vcons) at the terminals of the alternator. The method involves determining a control voltage (Vreg) replacing the current voltage setpoint (Vcons), the control voltage (Vreg) being determined as being the lower of two values, the current voltage setpoint (Vcons) and a voltage setpoint limit (Vconsl), the voltage setpoint limit (Vconsl) being calculated indirectly as a function of a current operating speed (N) of the alternator, a current ambient temperature (T) and a current voltage (V) at the terminals of the alternator.
