The present invention provides methods for promoting or increasing mitochondrial biogenesis in a neural cell. In some embodiments, the method comprises contacting the neural cell or administering a compound of Formula (I) described herein, a compound of Formula (II) described herein, resveratrol, betamethasone, an analog thereof, and/or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. Methods for preventing or treating disorders associated with insufficient mitochondrial function in neural cells are also provided.
