The present invention provides a device for carrying out traverse hardening on a shaft-like body comprising a main body section and a small-diameter section provided in the middle portion of the main body section in the axial direction and having a smaller outer diameter than the main body section, said traverse hardening device characterized by being equipped with: a primary coil member formed in an annular shape and in which a high-frequency current flows, and in the interior of which the shaft-like body is inserted; and a plurality of secondary coil members which can be arranged inside the primary coil member on the outside of the small-diameter section of the shaft-like body in the radial direction, and which are arranged with intervals therebetween in the circumferential direction. The present invention also provides a traverse hardening method.
