Disclosed in the present invention is a direct radiation wireless digital communication system based on a digitally programmable metamaterial, comprising a transmitting system and a receiving system. Information transmitted by the transmitting system is loaded onto the programmable metamaterial, and is directly radiated into a free space in the form of a constantly changing far-field pattern under irradiation of a feed antenna. The receiving system summarizes electric field values received by receiving antennas at different locations in a far-field area to obtain a far-field pattern, and recovers the transmitted original information by means of a mapping relationship between the far-field pattern and a coding sequence. The communication system provided by the present invention omits a digital-to-analog conversion module and a frequency mixing module, greatly simplifying the complexity of the communication system, and reducing the cost of the communication system. With inherent security features, the present invention can guarantee that transmitted information cannot be intercepted from a single point or a non-critical point from the lowest physical level, facilitates performance improvement, and has capabilities such as self-adaption and self-awareness.
