Systems and methods for identifying nucleotides based on data obtained from a sensor during sequencing of nucleic acids. The method may comprise obtaining the characteristics of light detected from the luminescent markers associated with the nucleotides during the nucleotide incorporation events. The characteristics may include, for each nucleotide incorporation event, a temporal characteristic of light and a light intensity characteristic. The time characteristic represents the attenuation rate of the photon emission probability by the emission label after this. The method may further comprise grouping the points representing the characteristics of the nucleotide incorporation events into groups of points. Individual points may exhibit at least a temporal and intensity characteristic for a corresponding nucleotide incorporation event. The method may further comprise assigning groups of points to individual nucleotides.
