The present invention relates to a method of preparing a sulfated tin oxide catalyst for chlorination, and a method of preparing a reaction product containing methyl chloride (CH_3Cl) by using the sulfated tin oxide catalyst. The sulfated tin oxide catalyst, when used in a chlorination reaction, can improve selectivity of methyl chloride. The method of preparing a sulfated tin oxide catalyst comprises a step of dissolving a tin precursor in a solvent, and a step of adding thereto aqueous ammonia until the pH of the solution reaches 7.5 or higher, thereby inducing a hydrolysis reaction of the tin precursor.
