Disclosed are an apparatus of limiting opening/closing surge and transient voltage and current of a mechanical switch, capable of limiting opening/closing surge of a mechanical switch and transient voltage and current generated according to charging of a capacitor by connecting, in parallel, a TSM having a thyristor, which is a power electronic device, and a control unit for controlling the mechanical switch to the mechanical switch for driving connected to the capacitor or a primary transformer, thereby improving a conventionally used mechanical switch without replacement thereof, and to a method thereof. The apparatus of limiting opening/closing surge and transient voltage and current of a mechanical switch, comprises: one or more thyristors connected to a capacitor bank consisting of a mechanical switch and a capacitor; a current transformer connected in series to the one or more thyristors and connected in parallel to the mechanical switch; and a control module for controlling opening and closing operations of the mechanical switch and turning on and off operations of the thyristors. According to the present invention, it is possible to reduce opening/closing surge and charging transient current to have a size similar to a TSC with lower costs than the TSC by using the existing equipment, and maintain conduction loss.;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2019
