An apparatus is provided for generating a three-dimensional point cloud for scanning the surface and representing the depth of the surface measured at each point. Generally, the apparatus and method utilize scan mirror (s) 104 to reflect the laser beam 102 in a pattern of scan lines 114. When the raster pattern of the scan line is directed at the surface, the reflection of the laser beam from the surface is received and used to generate a three-dimensional point cloud representing the measured surface depth at each point. The motion of the scanning mirror (s) can be dynamically adjusted to modify the characteristics of the resulting three-dimensional point cloud of the surface. For example, adjusting the scan mirror motion can modify the resolution or data density of the resulting three-dimensional point cloud that represents the measured depth of the surface.
