The present invention relates to an apparatus for monitoring the elderly who lives alone and, more specifically, to an apparatus for monitoring the elderly who lives alone, configured to determine presence of the elderly and whether an emergency situation occurs using sensors and a camera respectively installed in a privacy-uninvaded area and a privacy-invaded area. To this end, the apparatus for monitoring the elderly who lives alone comprises: a plurality of movement detection units installed in a monitored area of the elderly and configured to detect movement of an object; a lamp detection unit for detecting whether a lamp of the elderly is turned on or off; a behavior pattern distinguishing unit for distinguishing a human being from a companion animal by comparing a behavior pattern of the human being, which is a sensed object, with that of the companion animal based on a signal of the movement detection units; a location checking unit for generating location information and time information of the object based on the signal of the movement detection units; a presence determining unit for determining presence of the object based on signals of the plurality of movement detection units, the lamp detection unit, the behavior pattern distinguishing unit, and the location checking unit; and an emergency situation determining unit for determining whether an emergency situation occurs based on the location information and the time information generated by the location checking unit.
