The present invention relates to a method for providing virtual reality to recognize a walking motion of a user based on a foot image pattern of the user and synchronize the movement of an avatar in a virtual space with the movement of the user. More specifically, the present invention relates to a method for providing virtual reality based on foot image pattern analysis, which comprises the following steps: projecting the infrared light, which is emitted along the upper surface of the footplate, on the foot of the user located on the footplate which can transmit infrared rays; taking the reflected light reflected by the foot of the user located on the footplate with a camera provided under the footplate to obtain a foot image; analyzing a change pattern of the obtained foot image to recognize the walking motion of the user including the walking direction, the walking speed and the walking type; and synchronizing the recognized walking motion of the user with the movement of the avatar in the virtual space. Accordingly, the method is capable of effectively providing various types of walking simulations within the virtual reality through accurate recognition of the walking motion by the intention of the user with a simple configuration without a separate contact sensor for the user located on a footplate.
