A fuel economy indicator (FE) indicator lamp regulation system for a hybrid electric vehicle (10) having an internal combustion engine (12), comprising: a FE indicator lamp (50); a first module (502) that calculates an instant FE of the hybrid electric vehicle (10); a second module (500) that determines a speed (V _VEH ) of the hybrid electric vehicle (10); a third module (504) toggling the FE indicator lamp (50) between an on-state and an off-state based on the current FE and the velocity (V _VEH ); and a fourth module (506) that selectively initiates a hybrid engine off mode (HEOff mode), wherein the third module (504) switches the FE indicator lamp (50) to the on state when it is for a threshold time period in the hybrid engine off mode.
