A method of operating a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine adapted for DME fuel combustion and cylinder deactivation with diesel fuel rather than DME fuel, characterized in that the internal combustion engine is optimized for combustion of DME fuel but not for combustion of diesel fuel and that the cylinder deactivation is active when and only if the internal combustion engine is operated exceptionally with diesel fuel instead of DME fuel.
