A method for transmitting electrical power from a charging socket (LB) to an electrical energy store (ES) of a vehicle electrical system is described. The power is transmitted via an inverter (I) and an electrical machine (EM) connected to it. The inverter is operated together with an inductance (I) of the electric machine (EM) in the transmission of power as a DC-DC converter. According to a predetermined converter mode, the transmission direction of the power is selected by the inverter (I) and by the electric machine (EM) by means of a switching device (UV1, 2). The switching device connects the electric machine (EM) and the inverter (I) on the one hand to the energy store (ES) and the charging socket (LB) on the other.
