A mass storage unit package (10) includes a structure having a stack of two or more mass storage units (14) of the same dimensions, each having a form factor with two opposing major surfaces. The mass storage units (14) are superimposed on one another in a stacking direction perpendicular to their main surfaces. The mass storage unit package (10) further includes a control board (12) mounted flush therewithin the top of the stack, the control board (12) including connectors (125) connected to the mass storage units (14) of the stack so to control the mass storage units (14). The control board (12) has a form factor with two opposing major surfaces, the latter being opposed major surfaces of the plurality of mass storage units (14) of the stack, with a maximum dimension of each of the main surfaces of the control board (12) in each direction perpendicular to the stacking direction is less than or equal to a maximum dimension of the structure.
