A carton stack transfer device in a packaging machine has a gripping device which is arranged on an adjustable manipulator. The gripping device has at least two gripping jaws movable toward one another in a clamping direction, between which the folding box stack can be clamped. In addition, a suction device with at least one sucker is provided, which is adjustable by means of an adjustment so that the sucker with the surface of the carton stack is either in investment or out of investment brought. When converting a folding box stack, at least one sucker of the suction device is brought into contact with the surface of the folding box stack and the sucker is activated at least temporarily during the conversion of the folding box stack.
