A textile processing device (10) of the household equipment comprises a receiving space (12) for textile pieces (14) and a detection device (18) for detecting the presence of a textile piece in the receiving space. The detection device comprises a light emission unit (26) for emitting a light bundle (32) in the direction of a reference surface (36) of the textile processing device through a part of the receiving space, the light bundle having a bundle axis (34) and the reference surface having a surface normal at one location at which the bundle axis pierces the reference surface. Furthermore, the detection device has a first light detector (28) and a second light detector (30) for light intensity measurement at a first and second detection location. The first detection location is in the propagation path of light rays emerging from directed reflection of at least a portion of the light beam at the reference surface. The second detection location has a different angular distance from the surface normal than the first detection location. An evaluation unit (42) determines the presence of a textile item in the receiving space as a function of a first measured value and a second measured value, wherein the first measured value is representative of a light intensity detected by the first light detector and the second measured value is representative of one detected by the second light detector Light intensity.
