Disclosed is a method for creating a model of a hollow orthopedic appliance from an existing hollow tool or its negative impression with steps of digitizing an external geometry and digitizing an internal geometry of the existing appliance or negative impression intended for contact with the patient; Aligning and scaling the inner geometry with respect to the outer geometry; and creating the model depending on the outer geometry and inner geometry. Also disclosed are each a device for detecting and digitizing the internal and external geometry of the test tool. Furthermore, a unit for carrying out the method with the devices is disclosed.
