The invention relates to a method for operating a lighting device (30) of a motor vehicle. It has a strand (S) with a plurality of light sources (20) and a control unit (10). For a more effective control of the illumination device (30) individual characteristics are advantageous. In a learning phase, at least one light source in the strand (S) is activated at a first current intensity. This first current intensity is significantly lower than a second current intensity in an operating phase. A strand tension of the strand (S) and an associated temperature are measured. The associated values are saved. A second strand voltage (26) is determined in an operating phase of the illumination device (30) at a second current strength on the basis of the first strand voltage and the associated temperature and a temperature of the strand in the operating phase. Depending on a power consumption of the illumination device, a control signal for controlling the illumination device (30) is generated. The power consumption is determined by the second phase voltage and the associated second current.
