This method of automatic classification of a target ship (2) is characterized in that it is based on a sequence of energy profiles (Pi) delivered by a radar system (8) carried by an aircraft observing said target ship (2) , the sequence comprising at least one energy profile (Pi) indicating, for an observation direction (Z) of the radar system (8), a backscattered energy as a function of a distance from the radar system, and in that it consists of associating with the target ship (2) a class (Cj) selected from a group of predefined classes according to the values (pki) of a plurality of morphological parameters (pk) calculated on each profile of the sequence.
