The invention relates to a device (D) for monitoring an overhead contact wire of a railway installation such as a catenary (C), of the type that provides the acquisition of a plurality of data at a plurality of tensioning apparatus accompanying the horizontal travel of the contact wire for the purpose of maintaining its voltage, said tensioning devices optionally being equipped with a counterweight moving vertically, remarkable in that it comprises - a means for measuring the stroke horizontal contact wire, - an independent contact wire section (204) separated from the rest of the tensioned wire, said section (204) being positioned at the tensioning device and being associated with a measuring means the temperature (205) of said section (204), - a means for communicating the measured data. The invention also relates to a monitoring method exploiting said device.
