An impedance source inverter (100) is provided for connection to an electrical power source (S) and to an electrical machine (M). It comprises a go branch (Ba) having an input terminal (Tae) and an output terminal (Tas), a return branch (Br) having an input terminal (Tre) and an output terminal (Trs), at least one inverter arm (30) which connects the output terminals (Tas, Trs) of the forward and return branches and a control unit (50) of the at least one inverter arm (30) according to a diagram pulse width modulation control system including inverter arm short-circuit conditions. It further comprises two magnetically coupled inductors Z-source quasi-networks (10, 20), one of the networks (10) being associated with the forward branch (Ba) for driving current from the input terminal to the output terminal of the forward branch, the other of the networks (20) being associated with the return branch for conducting current from the output terminal to the input terminal of the return branch.
