A system and method for improving the range of motion of a patient

A system comprises at least one sensor for attaching to part of the anatomy of the human or animal body, and a processor for receiving 401 sensor signals from the at least one sensor, wherein the sensor signals comprise information indicating the location and/or orientation of the at least one sensor. The processor is configured to determine 403 a current range of motion of the part of the anatomy based on the sensor signals and determine 405 a target range of motion based on the current range of motion. The target range of motion is greater than the current range of motion. The processor is configured to output 407 an indication of the target range of motion, and optionally the current range of motion for displaying to a user. Another aspect relates to a method of treating a patient to improve the range of motion of a part of their anatomy. The target range of motion may be based on the current range of motion and an objective final range of motion. The objective final range of motion may be based on patient specific information such as the age of the patient.
