A first ontology 235 is provided defining products in terms of their method of manufacture and a second ontology 215 is provided defining the capabilities of a plurality of manufacturing facilities. A knowledge representation and reasoning (KR) system 225 receives a request in terms of the first ontology and deduces using logic and the second ontology an analysis of the feasibility of manufacturing the product with the available facilities and, if it is feasible, produces a manufacturing plan 250. The manufacturing facilities may be robotic and the capabilities categorised using hierarchical classification. Human editors may be able to edit the ontologies. The system may use neural networks and machine learning, regression analysis and/or statistical reasoning and can apply quantitative constraints to product specifications. The AI Knowledge Interchange Format may be used to represent the ontologies. The system may give explanations for the analysis and manufacturing plans to aid in improving product designs. Graphical symbols may be used to represent the programming language to assist novice programmers and ensure syntactic correctness (Figure 9).
