The method involves optimizing configurations by calculating a reservoir exploitation quality criterion using a flow simulator applied to a limited number of reservoir images and by configuration simulation results. Another reservoir exploitation quality criterion is calculated for the optimized configurations using a flow simulator applied to each image of the reservoir. A well location corresponding to the optimized configuration having a best quality criterion is selected. Wells are drilled at the selected location.
