A method to manufacture a component (10) comprising a columnar grain microstructure, the method comprising additively manufacturing a component (10),wherein the additively manufactured component comprises a polycrystalline microstructure; encasing the additively manufactured component (10) in a shell mold (22); wherein encasing the additively manufactured component (10) in the shell mold (22) comprises a process of: (a) dipping the entirety of the component (10) in a ceramic slurry to form a layer of the shell mold (22) on the entirety of the component (10), such that the layer is a ceramic layer; and (b) drying the layer of the shell mold (22); and (c) repeating steps (a) and (b) to increase a thickness of the shell mold (22); curing the shell mold (22); placing the encased additively manufactured component (10) in a furnace and melting the additively manufactured component (10) to form a melted component; solidifying the melted component (10) in the shell mold (22) to form a solidified component; and removing the shell mold (22) from the solidified component (10), wherein the solidified component comprises the columnar grain microstructure.
