The invention is based on a method or a device for recognizing an accident situation of a road user. This accident situation is identified by detecting a first sensor size of a first sensor. This can be, for example, an acceleration variable, the components of which are preferably detected and evaluated in at least two spatial directions. However, it is also conceivable to record a rotation rate as the first sensor variable. The essence of the invention is that a further sensor size is detected in the form of a magnetic field sensor size, by means of which the approach of a magnetic object, e.g. of a motor vehicle can be detected. Depending on this magnetic field sensor size, a classification of the accident can be made in connection with the previously recognized accident situation, which contains the information as to whether a motor vehicle is involved in the accident or not. Since the road user, e.g. a cyclist but also a pedestrian, in such cases it is more likely to have sustained a serious injury, it is advantageous to have this information available.
