Supported carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes are made by contacting a film of carbon-forming polymer onto a polymeric fabric to form a laminate. The laminate is then heated for a period of time under an atmosphere sufficient to carbonize the film and polymer fabric to form a supported CMS membrane. The formed supported CMS membrane is a laminate having a carbon separation layer graphite bonded to a carbon fabric, and the carbon molecular layer is a continuous layer. Supported CMS membranes are particularly useful for separating gases such as olefins from their corresponding paraffins. [Selection diagram] Figure 1
